Our work in science last week was studying spiders and how they made webs. This was great for Malcolm since he is fascinated with how snakes wrap people up so this was another creature that wraps things up before they eat them. The final project was for Malcolm to make his own spider web. The suggested project was to create a God’s eye that sort of looks like a web. That was too big of a stretch for me so I took it in a different direction. We simply bought a grapevine wreath and crochet thread (yarn would work too) at Wal-Mart. We used large plastic needles to get the yarn in through the small vines and then tied off the string. I helped with tying the string across the wreath and then he wound the circular parts around on his own.
Malcolm then went to his new studio space and created a spider that we affixed to the web. He really wanted to be able to make the web sticky but I vetoed that idea.
The last step was to include a poor little Lego man to the web. He eventually got wrapped up and tied into the web too. The Lego man was sacrificed for science.
